Language Revision Topics and Revision paper solution

Language Revision Topics and Revision paper solution

The topics to be revised are as follows:

Simile, Metaphor, Pun, Allegory, Hyperbole, Personification.

Find below the revision paper solution.

Language –Revision Paper, Unit 3

1)    Explain the difference between a “Hyperbole” and a “Personification” with an example each.

Hyperbole: You are as fat as an elephant

Personification: The sun smiled through the cloud.

From examples it is clear that hyperbole is an over-exaggerated statement whereas personification assigns human qualities to non-human creatures, objects and ideas.

2)    Identify and explain  the meaning  of the following figures of speech used:

  1. The goalkeeper is a rock.

Metaphor- The goalkeeper blocks the goal strongly like a rock

  1. Fear knocked at the door.

Personification- Fear is given the quality of knocking at the door. It signifies the approach of fear.

  1. The children surrounded her like the roots of a tree.

Simile- The children are compared to roots using the word “like”.

  1. The dictionary weighed a ton.

Hyperbole- The idea that the dictionary is heavy is exaggerated.

3)    Study the following image and answer the following questions

a)    Identify the figure of speech. b) Is the message effective& if yes, how?

Its pun intended. The word ‘horse’ is interchangeable with ‘hoarse’ which means sounding rough and harsh, typically as the result of a sore throat or of shouting.

4)    Read the passage given below and answer the question:

It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace.  Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook.  As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath.  Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also.  So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.

a)     Does the passage have a symbolic meaning?

Yes, the passage is classic example of allegory.

b)    If yes, how is the meaning related to our life (write in 30 words)?

The story relates with each individual. In life at times greed takes over and in the process of achieving the illusionary desires we tend to lose what is real.

Write a paragraph on your mother using at least TWO each of the following- simile, metaphor and hyperbole and also under-line them in the paragraph.
