Guest Speaker for the PYP Exhibition Tuning-in-activity

Ms. Sayanti Nandi, the school counselor, visited Grade 6 as a guest speaker for tuning in activity of the exhibition unit. She gripped her audience entirely and discussed with the learners how conflicts can be resolved amicably and peacefully. She stressed on her point through the quote:

“Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional.” By Max Lucade.

Through this quote she conveyed that we can decide how to approach a conflict.

If conflict is resolved using right strategies it is healthy and if not resolved it becomes unhealthy and leads to violence.

Learners came up with causes of conflicts like:

Different perspectives
Different level of understanding
She emphasized on the point that we all need to be appreciated and acknowledged and when these needs are met we feel satisfied, when not met, we feel angry; frightened; saddened and painful.

Through various role plays she explained how a frustrated person can be helped in times of crisis.

After the role play, she explained, in a conflict situation we need to understand a person’s needs and feelings by listening carefully and empathizing to come up with a healthy resolution.

She explained how an I message/statement can make the other person feel comfortable and consoled.

She said that, to order rather than request leads to conflict

It was overall a good learning session for our learners which will come in handy during the PYP Exhibition as well as during various phases of conflict resolution in life.
