HeyMath Competetion for Grade 8

Dear Students,

A brief description on HeyMath Competition :

Since 2008, HeyMath! and Raffles Institution, a leading secondary school in Singapore have conducted a national mathematics talent contest for high-ability students. This year, they propose to bring this to India for students of Classes 7,8 & 9. The aim is to create more interest in Mathematics and encourage more students to take up the subject. 

There will be two rounds in this contest – an online test round and a written exam for the qualifying 50 students. This will be a FREE contest and the school will register students online. To know more you can check the following site:

Interested students are required to give their names positively by monday.

Dear parent,

The highlights of the week are:

Circle Time

  • Music & movement: Morning strut song

Language:

Introduction of ‘am’ word family. ( jam, yam, ham, ram, Sam, dam,pram,gram, tram, exam, ma’am, clam, swam).
Homework:

Tuesday: writing in notebook ‘am’ word family(jam, yam, ham, ram, Sam, dam,pram)

Saturday: writing in notebook ‘am’ word family(gram, tram, exam, ma’am, clam, swam).

Math:

Introduction of numbers 41 to 60 with forward & backward numbers.

 

Homework:

Tuesday: Writing in the notebook forward numbers -1 to 60

Saturday: Backward numbers- 60 to 1

Unit of Inquiry:

TDT: How we organise ourselves

Central idea: Events involve planning, organising and decision making.

 

Tuning In :- Exploration Table: The students explored items related to various events  followed by discussion where the students came up with the word “Planning”.

 

Sequencing the event: The students were divided into different groups and each group was  given flashcards related to different events (like birthday party, going for a movie, going for dinner and night out). The students were asked to  sequence the cards . This helped the students understand that each event needs planning.

 

Read aloud: Clifford’s birthday party

Note: Kindly make your child  practice the dialogues sent to you for the X-Box performance.

Dear Parents,

  • Please send the passport photographs of all the family members who are living with the child for our next unit by Tuesday without fail.
  • Also send the show and tell objects and pictures for alphabets ‘K’ and ‘L’ next week.
  • Those parents who have not sent the Dandiya sticks please send it as we will need for the X.Box performance.
  • Those who have got the dialogue strips today please make your child practise the dialogues for the X. box.Those students who have not got the dialogues for this X.Box performance will definitely get for the next X.box performance.

Highlights of the week (16/09/13 – 21/09/13)

Language

The learners were introduced with 10 new words and their meanings. They revised the concept of articles that was done in Grade 1. A video was also shown to them and the concepts of ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’ was thorough through this. Definition regarding the same was also written in the language notebook. Learners also wrote fill in the blanks with appropriate articles in their language notebooks.

Oral Strategy: Discussion with the learners was taken on the topic “Various responses when someone says sorry”. They came up with several responses that are: no problem, it’s perfectly fine, that’s OK, please don’t do this again, etc.

Math

3 step addition word problems were done in their math notebooks. The learners revised 3 D shapes (cone, cuboid, sphere, cube and cylinder) through a song and a P.P.T. was also shown.

Note: Learners practiced climbing the rock climbing wall today and had a great fun doing that. They also attended assembly today where they saw inter-house dance competition.
