We started with the topic of enzymes where we studied the relation of enzyme with a chemical catalyst. We discussed how enzymes are given specific names and specific properties of enzymes. Students learnt the lock and key model of enzyme action and they learnt that in case of a metabolic reaction, a reactant is known as a substrate. We analyzed graphs from the textbook to understand the effect of pH and temperature on enzyme action. It was very interesting for them to know the application of enzymes in detergent industry, fruit juice, baby food etc. They were introduced to the concept of fermentor which is used for mass production in the industry. Next week in double slots they will perform experiments based on their learning.
