Two Weeks in PhysEd at FS (TWiPE)

Two Weeks in PhysEd at FS (TWiPE)

Episode #11

There is a constant emphasis on the scope of improvement in every field.

How do you improve? Where are the loop holes? Do I need to improve? What can help me improve? These questions keep haunting. Analysing oneself is difficult when you don’t know what others are doing better than you. With this constant swirl within myself I know where I can look up, “Twitter” an amazing PLN where I connect with 100’s of PhysEd teachers day IN day OUT. Just say it and its there, loads of resource, information, lesson plans, activities, etc….

Every day my twitter PLN challenges me to do things differently with constant scope of improvement.

Here is an amazing conversation between 3 PhysEd teachers Ross Halliday (Australia), Nathan Horne (Singapore) and Andy Vasily (China). They are conversing about how twitter lead them to develop online professional platform.

Hygiene is one of the aspects of our unit. When we started catering to the fact “Why we need to wash our hands and keep ourselves clean?” we found that the kids are very much aware of these facts. Kids answered “Dirty hands are doorway for germs to the stomach.” “We will fall ill if we eat unhealthy food.” Now that the kids were reflecting so much it was time to put it into action, so we planned an activity where they showed their understanding and reflected on the same.

Grade 1
When given a chance to a PE teacher he/she will love to keep their learners physically active and at times we also become the devils in proving so. To cater to importance of rest and food we made learners play different games where they connected their understanding to real life. Their reflections were amazing.

Snatching the healthy food

Grade 2
We make mistakes and may not get a 2nd chance, we learn and may not get a chance to implement but to learn and excel we need to provide opportunities for the learners to show their understanding and action of the same. To strive for excellence during second chance should be easier as we reflect on things we need to perform differently, but for my Grade 2 learner at time it was an easy job and at times it was a difficult job to perform.

I know for sure that whether learners win or lose I need to appreciate their efforts and this time I took the opportunity to give them a token of appreciation as they act on their previous performances.

Grade 3
After knowing and learning all the drills for kabbadi our next mission was to conquer the knock out match which was the summative assessment task. Woohooo learner conquered and won which led their entry to the semi-finals.

Semi-final was a tough one. Learners tried their best but somehow lost the game.

Kabbadi

There are all pepped up for the next game (Kho-Kho).

Grade 4
As we move ahead with our unit these learners learn a variety of strength training exercises through different circuit training.

It is very important to take students back to enduring understanding of the unit. While I do this there were misconceptions which were cleared during the unit. Learners understood how exercise acts as constant and time/repetition/sets act as variable in regards to the training program they perform.

Upper Body Circuit

Grade 6
While my Grade 6 groups still take time to discuss and finalize their adventure game, one of the group end up into a heated discussion regarding safety measures for their design.

Risk taking ability and safety measures go hand in hand. Throughout the PYP journey learners have been drilled about these concepts. Just as I listen to this conversation I realize how student reflect upon their learning.

Heated discussion

Surat Night Marathon
FS motivates and wants staff members to strive through their fitness levels. So when a Marathon is conducted in the city why not run for your own fitness. We had a group of 20+ people running this year for the Surat Marathon in different category.

Parents are also an integral part of our FS community and what a pleasure to see few parents run with all enthusiasm. Wow! What a gush on the ground.

Kudos to all who participated and showed the courage to run.

Sorry for the delay in the post.
I surely know I need to be proactive in posting TWiPE .

Hope you enjoy reading.

Regards,
Reema

Settling Time: Learners practiced the concept of clock.

Language

Read aloud on the book “Franklin plays the game” written by  Paulette Bourgeois  as an integration with the unit “Who we are” catering to the 3rd line of inquiry “Challenges and rewards of team work.” The line of inquiry was catered through oral discussions.

[Unit Of Inquiry]

Watched a movie “Racing Stripes” for the unit “Who we are” focusing the 1st Line of Inquiry “Learning through games.”

Homework

Reflections of the day: 5th March: Day 5: Grade 1: Trust

UOI: How the world works: Light:
Tuning of light:

The teacher took students to the dark room and asked them to search the hidden object. Students reflected that they cannot see as there is no light in the room. Later lights were switched on and they were given the same instructions. They successfully completed the activity. After the activity teacher took the inquiry and recorded the difference in both the scenarios.
1st property of light: Light reflects
Students were taken to a dark room (X-box and Pulse room) and divided into groups of 3. They were instructed to do an activity using torch and mirror. Later a discussion was conducted for the same and students reflected that when they had flashed the torch light on mirror, light reflected back on their friend’s body.( HRT can add students pictures, performing the activity instead of this)
