Dear parents,

As a part of our culmination of the unit ” Healthy lifestyle” parents did a role play. The role play helped the learners to get a better understanding about what are the various components to lead a  healthy lifestyle. A heartfelt thanks to the parents for sparing their valuable time to enhance their child’s learning.

Here are a few glimpses of the same.

English Highlights of the week_Grade 9_Serendipity_Eureka_Fortuity

Dear Parents,

This week the students started with their Internal Assessment on the “Phoenix Effect”. They were then taught the concept of usury.

Usury as a concept simply means charging interest on a loan.  Historically many cultures have regarded charging interest as a sin (Christianity/ Islam) and people involved in Usury (referred to as the Loan Sharks) were always looked down upon.

In an endeavour to bring a real life connection, the students were asked if it existed even now. To this they promptly spoke about Home Loans/Car Loans EMI etc.

They were then divided into teams and taught about the concept of Credit Cards (which they thought was their own money that they were using to shop). They were taught to calculate Finance charges and how rolling over unpaid amount from one month to another leads to heavy debts and a disturbed state of mind.

Then came the best part, the students were divided into groups and given (ficticious) Rs. 10,000 and asked to shop online on Flipkart for each of their team members. One group member noted all items and then they had to calculate the Finance charges each moth that they did not pay the bill. (A 2.25 percent finance charge becomes 27 percent per annum)

The students thoroughly enjoyed window shopping and could easily understand how irresponsible use of any form of debt can have fatal repercussions.

They also understood the reason behind the rise of Usury and the fact that Shakespeare’s play only reflects the reality that despite the religious norms that may forbid people from charging interest or lending/borrowing money yet it was practised. With the rise banking industry, the discovery of the new world and the growth of overseas market and trade, it became imperative to lend and borrow money.

 Regards

Vagisha
