Slam and read!!

Slam and read!!

Yet another playful way to revise sight words..!!  Learners stood in a circle, flash cards of sight words (2 letters) were scattered in between. Turnwise each learner came in the centre and hit the flash card with a ball and read the word. They were quite enthusiastic to slam and read the words. Sharing few pics:

Highlights of the week- 29th June to 4th July ’15

[Unit Of Inquiry]

Transdisciplinary theme: How we organize ourselves

Central idea: Signs and symbols are a part of human made systems that facilitates local and global communication.

1. Ms. Silent:

Teacher remained silent for certain time and communicated with the learners through actions (non- verbal communication). Learners constantly kept on asking the reason for being silent and many of them assumed that: “Ma’am has fast or has pain in her throat or is angry…”. Later on, the learners figured out that it was a part of their learning engagement or tuning in. Further, the learners were asked certain questions like:

  1. How did your teacher communicate with you?

They came up with the words signs and symbols then they were asked..

  1. Why are signs and symbols used?

Learning outcome: Checking the prior knowledge of the topic- Sign and symbol.

2. Gallery walk: Pictures of different signs and symbols were displayed in the class, learners observed them and then reflected using 10:1 strategy in their UOI notebook.

Learning outcome: Checking the prior knowledge of the topic- Sign and symbol.

Language

  1. Learning centres were introduced where they were tuned to various senses.

Workstation 1. Sense of taste: Learners were asked to taste Sugar (Sweet), Lemon juice (sour), onion (pungent), salt (salty), bitter (bitter gourd), cauliflower (astringent) etc, and were asked to match it with the taste cards given to them. They wrote the same in a booklet prepared for them to reflect.

Workstation 2: Sense of touch:

Learners explored various objects with the  different surface such as cold water, warm water, stones, cotton, sharpened pencils, etc.

Later on, learners matched the flash card (object and different touch ) and wrote the same.

Workstation 3: Sense of smell:

Learners smelled  objects kept on the learning station and explored different smells such as- Fresh flowers (fresh/ sweet), popcorn (buttery), ketchup (tangy) etc.

Later on, learners matched the flash card (object and different smells ) and were asked to match it with the smell cards given to them. They wrote the same in a booklet prepared for them to reflect.

Workstation 4: Sense of sight:

Learners were asked to look at number books which were at the learning station  and were asked to observe illustrations. They wrote the same in a booklet prepared for them to reflect.

Workstation 5: Sense of Hear:

Learners explored the sound of various instruments and wrote about different sounds such as- shrill, dead sound, lazy sound, etc.

Learning outcome- To know about 5 senses.

  1. Learners saw the video related to 5 senses and discussed the same.

Link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMPrZkEL9W8

Learning outcome- To know about 5 senses.

3.Learners were engaged in a discussion along with the teacher where they had to describe a food item(popcorn) using all 5 senses..

E.g. 1.Sense of sight- yellow, small etc

2. Sense of taste- cheesy, salty etc.

4. Poem Recitation from Chapter-1 The Magic Paintbrush from Empowering English reference book  and discussed the same.

Learning outcome- To learn the importance about 5 senses.

Math

  1. Musical chairs activity– Here, the teacher made students play a musical chair where on each chair the number placard was stuck. As the music stopped, the students sitting on the chair had to form the number using base 10 blocks. Later, learners wrote numbers in their notebooks and also wrote predecessor and successor of the number formed by them.

Learning outcome: To help students to form the numbers in thousands and their place value.

2.The students wrote numbers from (1000- 1020 and 1081 – 1100) in their Math notebook.

Learning outcome: To help students to write the numbers in sequence.

  • Learning centres:

Workstation 1: Learners picked a number card from each basket and modeled the number using base ten blocks. They wrote and drew the modeled number in their notebook. In the next step, they modeled predecessor and successor of the number and wrote the same including the number names in the notebook.

Workstation 2: Learners formed 4 digit numbers using place value cards, then they wrote the number and its place value in their notebook.

For eg: 1235= 1 thousand + 2 hundred + 3 tens + 5 ones.

Workstation 3: A spinner was provided at this station with all the instructions written on it. The learners had to spin the spinner and do the task mentioned on it in their notebook.

For instance: State whether the given number is odd or even, write next 5 numbers for the given number etc.

Workstation 4: Learners were asked to write numbers from 1080 to 1100 in their notebook.
