G12 French Highlights of the week and Syllabus for the October 2016 term exams

Dear parents,

This week we are still working on the chapter Au travail. We also dedicated a few slots to the written assignment since the final submissions are due.

The syllabus for the October 2016 term exams include all chapters from Panorama Francophone 1 and till chapter 8 from Panorama Francophone 2.

Students will attempt two papers, paper 1 which is text handling exercises – reading comprehension and paper 2 which is a written paper with two sections, one in which they have to write minimum 50 words and the other in which they have to write minimum 100 words.

As IA, students will attempt a oral test where they will select a visual stimulus of the given ones and present it. They will get 15 minutes preparation time. Then, they will be asked general questions on the stimulus followed by a general conversation session.

Smruti

G11 Highlights of the week and Syllabus for the October 2016 term exams

Dear parents,

This week, we completed the chapter Mon Paradis sur Terre with quite a bit of emphasis on vocabulary, reading comprehension exercises and speaking skills.

The syllabus for the October 2016 Term 1 exam is as follows :

From Panorama Francophone 1, we will have chapters 1 – 8.

We will have two papers, following the IBDP pattern:

  • Paper 1 would be reading comprehension exercises with 4 text handling exercises which will be based on vocabulary from these 9 chapters. This would be for 40 marks.
  • Paper 2 would have two sections where, in the first section, students will write a task on a given topic with pointers for minimum 50 words and in the second section, students will write a task on a given topic for minimum 100 words. These tasks will be based on what has been learnt in these 9 chapters. This paper carries 25 marks.

Apart from this we will have two IAs.

  • A visual stimulus would be given to the students and they would present the same for around 2 minutes. They would be given a preparation time of 15 minutes. Then, they will have questions on the stimulus, the written assignment and a general conversation session.
  • Written assignment – where they would choose a cultural aspect that they would compare for a francophone country and India. The deadlines for this task have been decided in consensus with the students and has been posted on the classroom. Here is the same for your reference.
    • First draft : 25 September 2016
Comments to be given by 27 September 2016.
      Final draft :
      Soft deadline : 8 October 2016
Hard deadline : 11 October 2016 after which no submissions will be entertained.
No consultations between the soft and hard deadlines will be allowed.

Please feel free to send me an email in case of any queries.

Smruti

G12 English Syllabus for the October 2016 exams and highlights of the week

G12 English Syllabus for the October 2016 exams and highlights of the week

Dear parents,

This week was quite hectic since students were trying hard to meet their deadline for submission of their CWT. There wasn’t much teaching that happened in class.

Plus, here is the syllabus for the October 2016 term exams :

Syllabus for the October 2016 Exams :

  • Paper 1 : Students are instructed to write an analysis of one of the texts, including comments on the significance of any possible contexts, audience, purpose and the use of linguistic and literary devices.  The texts for analysis are not necessarily related to specific parts of the syllabus. Different non-literary text types are included, for example:
    • opinion column
    • extract from an essay
    • electronic text (such as social networking sites, blogs)
    • brochure (such as a public information leaflet)
    • extract from a memoir, diary or other autobiographical text (HL only).
Students are required to analyse and comment on the text in the light of their understanding of its possible audience and purpose. In order to achieve this, students need to analyse structure, language and style in addition to aspects such as text type, context, bias and/or ideological position.
  • Paper 2
    • A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen
    • A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
    • A Streetcar Named Desire (HL only)

This is, in fact, the same as the syllabus for the final IBDP exams. Paper 1 is textual analysis for SL and comparative textual analysis for HL. Paper 2 is similar where they choose one of the 6 generic questions on literature and write an answer based any of the two texts that has been studied for Paper 2.

The assessment criteria for Paper 1 are:

  • Criterion A : Understanding of the text
  • Criterion B: Understanding of the use and effects of stylistic features
  • Criterion C : Organization and development
  • Criterion D : Language

Each criterion weighs 5 points and hence the total is 20.

The assessment criteria for Paper 2 are:

  • Criterion A : Knowledge and Understanding
  • Criterion B: Response to question
  • Criterion C : Understanding of the use and effects of stylistic features
  • Criterion D : Organization and development
  • Criterion E : Language

Each criterion weighs 5 points and hence the total is 25.
