This week we discussed metabolism, cell respiration and photosynthesis in unit 8 and started with unit 9 ‘Genetics and Evolution’ with HL students, while SL students were making notes for unit 1 and 2. SL students were also asked to solve questions related to the same unit.
This week students learnt about the methods and apparatus to measure the rates of reaction involving change in mass over time, effect of catalyst on rate of reaction and examples of explosive reaction in terms of increased surface area. The learning was supplemented with lecture method, classroom discussion and videos.

This week HL students learnt about the stereochemistry of organic compounds, they learnt the conformational , configurational and optical isomers with ral life examples like case studies of sleeping pills Thalidomide in USA and the potential side effects.Ã‚Â The lessons contained lecture method, classroom discussions, use of organic compound models and animations.Both SL and HL students also solved paper 1 of 2014 May session as part of their revision

This week we completed reading and analyzing Act 2 – Scene 2 of the drama – Inherit The Wind. Students annotated their understanding using different stylistic devices – diction, figures of speech, tone, mood, characterization and many more.
Students were also given time to complete their 25 mark answer.
Grade 11 ESS students continued to learn the unit “Ecosystems and Ecology”. After completing the topics S-curves and J-curves, they moved on to learn about how “Communities and ecosystems” are related under the unit of the same name. They discussed the topics “respiration and photosynthesis” where in we talked about how these two processes are the bases of the entire flow of energy production, transfer and transformation in all ecosystems. They participated in discussing and presenting similarities and differences between a food chain and a food web. After learning about the three types of ecological pyramids, they represented the data pertaining to an ecosystem in pyramids of numbers, biomass and productivity on a graph paper using their understanding of the classification. They are given a worksheet related to food consumption and energy transformation through food chains which they are expected to submit on Monday, 12 December 2016.
Note: Grade 11 ESS students will have their second Unit test on Monday, 19 December 2016 (Day 6) during the ESS slot. The syllabus for this unit test will be communicated to the students in the next week through an announcement on Google classroom.Ã‚Â
