Mathematical Association of America Competitive Exams for the Academic Year 2017-18

Mathematical Association of America Competitive Exams for the Academic Year 2017-18

Dear Parents,

This February, your child can participate in the 69th annual American Mathematics Competitions 10/12 (AMC 10/12) being offered in our school. The AMC 10/12 is the nation’s leading mathematics competition for high schoolers and is designed to cultivate the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem solvers. In 2017, approximately 180,000 students worldwide participated in the AMC 10/12.

Students who take the AMC 10/12 have the opportunity to develop creative quantitative thinking skills, which better prepares them to succeed in college math classes. Furthermore, mathematics drives the innovations that shape our society and is useful in a broad range of careers, even those that are not traditionally mathematical, scientific or technological in nature. By offering these competitions the Mathematical Association of America aims to challenge and inspire students to become lifelong learners of mathematics.

After the competition results are compiled, certificates will be presented to the student with the highest score in each school, to nationally high-scoring students, and to all who participated in the competition. But the real rewards come from challenging each student with mathematics that is new, different, and “outside the box.” Competition problems are more difficult than those encountered routinely in math courses, but they are designed to connect to high school mathematics standards to ensure they are within the reach of students. The measure of the success of the competition is not the number of problems solved but is the level of engagement with mathematics that arises from the intellectual challenge of the problem-solving process. I hope your student enjoys the competition and continues down the path to a lifetime of success with, and love of, mathematics.

AMC Categories:

American Mathematics Competition 10/12 (AMC 10/12): AMC’s high school level competition, (Click on the link for more details)

American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME): AMC’s invitational competition for high scoring AMC 10/12 participants only

American Mathematics Contest 10

Format: The AMC 10 A/B (Grade 9 and 10) is a 25 question, 75-minute multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with algebra and geometry concepts.

American Mathematics Contests 12

Format: The AMC 12 A/B (Grade 11 and 12) is 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examinations in high school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills.

The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus. Students in grade 12 and below can write this contest.

What is the difference in the A and B versions of the examinations?

Both the A and the B versions of the AMC 10 and the AMC 12 have the same number of questions, the same scoring and the same rules for administration. The only differences are the competition dates and that each version has a distinct set of questions, although the two examinations are designed to be equal in difficulty and distribution of topics. Schools can order one or both versions of the tests, so long as they pay the appropriate registration fee for each competition date, and purchase the competition bundles for each date.

Please note that the exam has been offered on 2 dates (AMC 10/12 A-7th & AMC 10/12 B-15th Feb, 2017) but we are offering only 15th Feb as on 7th Feb, 2018 we have student life classes scheduled.
