With this new unit, students got an opportunity to dig deeper into the Research Process which will help them in Exhibition. They were divided into groups and asked to choose a topic which concerns them. They came up with wonderful topics like Child Labour, Poverty, Sports in India, etc.
Getting into research groups and starting with the research was exhilarating for them. Starting with the steps of Big Six Research Process,
Step 1: Task definition.
Exemplars of task definition were shared, to give the students a fair idea about the expectations and what exactly needs to be done in this step.
They were asked to write questions about their research topic which will serve as guiding questions for their inquiry.
Since a lot of ICT is integrated with the unit, they had a hands-on learning experience with Google sheet and Google forms.
Step 2: Information Seeking Strategies.
Moving forward to the step 2, the teacher posed the following questions to help the students to identify the resources for their research.
- What will you do to seek information about the topic selected?
- Why do we collect data?
- What are the different ways of collecting data in general?
- What strategies will you use to collect data for your inquiry project?
This helped them understand Primary research and Secondary research.
Step 3: Location and Access
After learning about the types of primary research, we focused on Maths, Data Handling Strand, covering survey and Interview in detail.
Talking about the survey, starting with open ended and closed ended questions, they even learnt about the possible errors one can make while preparing a questionnaire. They practised making survey questionnaires and used Google form to create survey form. A formative assessment was conducted on identifying survey errors and correcting them.
Creating the survey form led them to question who will be their target audience. They learnt about sampling and sampling process to ease their survey process and identify their target audience.
The teacher gave a demo on conducting an interview, keeping in mind the etiquettes to be followed during the interview. Students then interviewed their peers and gave feedback to each other so that they can improve on the same.
Step 4: Use of Information
After conducting the research, it was time to read and understand the information so as to present and influence.
Step 5: Synthesis
The next step post understanding and reading the information students were asked to think about the ways to present information. In the beginning of the unit, they were asked to make connections with the tuning in activity in which they were exposed to various forms of expressions to influence.
Language plays an important role when it comes to expression. Persuasive writing is a form of expression to influence the audience.
Students were introduced to various strategies like ethos, pathos, logos, etc that can be used to persuade the audience. They analysed exemplars and were inspired by the same. They were also provided with sentence starters and vocabulary to be used for persuasion. Watching the video of the book, “I Wanna Iguana”, helped students to think about creative reasons and power of words.
Currently, the students are practising persuasive writing skills. The topic given to them is “Chocolates should be allowed in school”. The students are supposed to persuade the management through a written format.
