G11_English A:Language and Literature_Term 2_Syllabus and Exam pattern

Dear students and parents,
The following is the list of topics covered for Term 2 for English A: Language and Literature:

Part 1: Language in cultural context:
Learning outcome – Analyse how audience and purpose affect the structure and content of texts; Analyse the impact of language changes; Demonstrate an awareness of how language and meaning are shaped by culture and context

Topics studied – Gender, Sexuality and Language and Taboo for SL/HL + History and Evolution of Language (for HL).

Part 2: Language and mass communication
Learning outcome – Examine different forms of communication within the media; Show an awareness of the potential for educational, political or ideological influence of the media; Show the way mass media use language and image to inform, persuade or entertain

Topics studied – Popular culture, Use of persuasive language and Textual Bias for SL/HL + Stereotypes (for HL).

Part 3: Literature—texts and contexts
Learning outcome -Consider the changing historical, cultural and social contexts in which particular texts are written and received; Demonstrate how the formal elements of the text, genre and structure can not only be seen to influence meaning but can also be influenced by context; Understand the attitudes and values expressed by literary texts and their impact on readers

Texts studied –

SL and HL – A Doll’s House;The Dark Room
HL only – Persepolis

Exam Pattern:
Final IB FOA1:
Can be based on either Part 1 or Part 2 work. It has to be a combination of creative and analytical. Presentations will be given a maximum of 15 minutes. FOA is marked out of 30.

Paper 1:
Will be based on any of the topics and learning outcomes of Parts 1 or two. Students will attempt an analysis on one of the two unseen texts (SL) or one out of two unseen pairs of texts (HL). SL students will get 1.30 hours to complete the paper while HL students will get 2 hours to complete the paper.

Paper 2:
Will be based on the texts taught for part 3. Students will have to attempt any one our of the 6 questions asked. The response must be in the form of an essay/commentary in response to the questions with the texts to validate the responses.
SL students will get 1.30 hours to complete the paper while HL students will get 2 hours to complete the paper.
