Adjective Game:

 

Grade 1 students played card game which focused on describing words (adjectives). They were provided with the set of picture cards and one set of describing word cards. Students practiced and revised adjectives through this game.

They enjoyed the game and learned new words. Students enhanced their social skills by playing this game in groups.

Picture Sudoku Puzzle Game

Students played “Picture Sudoku Puzzle ” game for enhancing their logical thinking. It is a logical puzzle game that demands mental effort to solve it. It also helps in building concentration span. It has been identified that if children are exposed to logical thinking from a very young age, they learn to think critically and gain confidence as well.

LEAP Session

During LEAP session, students played a game ‘Hedbanz’. It is a question game of “What am I?” Students could only ask dichotomous question that has either  “yes” or “no” answer. The questions were asked to figure out if the cartoon on the head is an animal, food or man-made object.

Students took turns to play the game and guess the object.They enjoyed this game a lot which helped to enhance their communication skill.

During the unit Sharing the planet, Grade 1 students reflected on waste management process. They also reflected about their responsibilities and choices. They could identify that our actions have an impact on environment. They could brainstorm and come up with different actions to manage the waste by using the graphic organizer. They decided to reuse the old newspapers to make paper bags which may reduce plastic waste.

Probability:

During LEAP session, students constructed meaning  of probability i.e. the possibility of an event to occur.

They were introduced to the vocabulary like –  Impossible and possible(May be,likely and certainly)with real life examples.

The students could think and come up with different possibilities in real life situations.


While students were giving examples, teacher provoked students to come up with the reason behind their answers.

Later, they were given few situations and were asked to sort out the different situations with logical reason.

Wind mill

During  this unit,maker’s activity was  activity in their LEAP class.The students followed all the given instructions and made paper wind mill with the help of the teacher. While doing the activity they identified the property of air – Air pushes things.During this activity they exhibited self management skills by maintaining ‘Safety’ while working with scissors and thumb pins.

 

Air makes bubbles

Students conducted an experiment that proved that  ‘air occupies space’.

The experiment was conducted using the glass and water. Students could understand that when the glass is tilted in the water the bubbles come out. This experiment helped students to understand that bubbles are formed because of air.

Salamander combine it !

Learners played the game name “ Salamander Combine it!” .In this game they had to combine the Hundreds,Tens and Ones to form a 3 digit number.

Through this game, they revised and practiced the concept of place value and number formation.

Racing car

Grade 1 students played the “Racing Car” board game which is a number game and caters to the number strand  (greater than & lesser than numbers)in LEAp session.

Students  were put in 5 groups of four each. Each group was given a “Racing car” board ,four different coloured counters and number cards.Amongst the group, each learner had to pick up 1 card.Then they had to  show and compare their cards.The student with greatest number card had  to move his /her counter on the board.They kept playing till one of them reached the finishing point and won the game.

Most of them  were confidently reflecting on their knowledge of place value by identifying the greatest number , smallest number and they also demonstrated social skills by playing this game in groups.Students enjoyed the game and all of them wanted to be winners.

LEAP integration with the unit “How we express ourselves”

LEAP integration with the unit “How we express ourselves”

I see,I think,I wonder

During LEAP session,  students reflected on a story read aloud  through I see, I think, I wonder tool.The session was integrated with the unit How we express ourselves. Students reflected on what they saw or observed in the story and what they think about their observation.

They shared  their curiosity by wondering and asking questions related to  the story.This tool helped them  enhance their observation and thinking skill(metacognition).

Colour/Symbol/Image

Under the TDT ‘How we express ourselves’, Grade 1 students learned about various symbols, images and their colours through the reflection tool named ‘Colour, Symbol, Image’- CSI. This tool helped in enhancing creative thinking in students.

During the discussion, they reflected about various colours and symbols used by different organizations, company or applications like – Apple, Fountainhead school etc.

The purpose of taking up this tool is to allow them to reflect and share their understanding about the main idea of the story or illustration.

Students used their knowledge, creativity and thinking skills  while reflecting on their favourite book in a group.They selected a colour which represented their thoughts about the book and also drew a symbol for it .  

Later, they created an image of their favorite part of the story or the main idea of the book. While using the tool CSI in a group, students  exhibited social skills by respecting others and cooperating. Students enjoyed the session

Session on integration with the unit ‘How we express ourselves’:

During this session,  Grade 1 students reflected how we express our feelings and thought by choosing different medium.

Students observed and explored various mediums- dance,drama,music, posters and books as means of  expressing our ideas and thoughts.

Students were able to  identify that various mediums were giving out the same message of ‘Saving trees’ in different forms.

During discussion, they also reflected on how authors and illustrators choose different medium to express their thoughts, experience and feelings.

Session on Plus Minus and Interesting:

Grade1 students reflected on the unit How we express ourselves during the LEAP session through the thinking routine tool ‘Plus,Minus and Interesting’ .

They reflected about what they liked during the unit. They shared few suggestions for the unit.

They reflected on  learning engagement which they found  interesting and enjoyable.

During the session , students demonstrated the PYP Attitudes ‘Enthusiasm and Cooperation’.

Cycle 1 LEAP

During this  session, introduction and essential agreements were taken up in the class.

In later session, learners enjoyed doing ‘Artistic creation’ activity.

Learners enjoyed making origami paper aeroplane. They were actively engaged during this activity. Initially, they were little confused about paper folding but later they understood the entire procedure. They were able to make the aeroplane and they enjoyed decorating it.Through this activity they tried to enhance their fine motor skill as well as listening skill. At last, the little learners were happy playing with the aeroplane.
