Dear Students and Parents,

Below is the curriculum and paper style for Math Studies SL Term-1 Examination.

Curriculum :

Unit 3 – Logic , Sets and Probability
Unit 4 – Statistical Applications
Unit 6 – Mathematical Models
Unit 7 – Introduction to Differential Calculus

Paper Style :

Dear Parents and Students,
Please find below the details of the syllabus of Mathematical Studies SL for the 2nd Term examination of 2017-2018.

Syllabus for Second term examination :
(1) Number & Algebra
(2) Descriptive Statistics
(3) Geometry & Trigonometry
(4) Sets and Probability
(5) Mathematical Models

(Refer these chapters from Oxford Mathematical Studies SL book – 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10)

There will be two papers for Mathematical Studies SL for the first term examination:
Paper 1:
Total Marks- 90
Duration- 1 hour 30 minutes
15 compulsory short-response questions based on the topics mentioned above.
Weightage- 50%

Syllabus coverage
• Knowledge of all topics is required for this paper. However, not all topics are necessarily assessed in
every examination session.
• The intention of this paper is to test students’ knowledge and understanding across the breadth of the
syllabus. However, it should not be assumed that the separate topics are given equal emphasis.
Question type
• Questions may be presented in the form of words, symbols, diagrams or tables, or combinations of these.
• Questions of varying levels of difficulty are set.
• One or more steps may be needed to answer each question.

Paper 2:
Total Marks- 90
Duration- 1 hour 30 minutes
6 compulsory extended-response questions based on the topics mentioned above.
Weight-age- 50%

Questions in this section will vary in terms of length and level of difficulty.
Individual questions will not be worth the same number of marks. The marks allocated are indicated at
the start of each question.

Syllabus coverage
• Knowledge of all topics is required for this paper. However, not all topics are necessarily assessed in
every examination session.
• The intention of this paper is to test students’ knowledge and understanding of the syllabus in depth. The
range of syllabus topics tested in this paper may be narrower than that tested in paper 1.
Question type
• Questions require extended responses involving sustained reasoning.
• Individual questions may require knowledge of more than one topic.
• Questions may be presented in the form of words, symbols, diagrams or tables, or combinations of these.
• Normally, each question reflects an incline of difficulty, from relatively easy tasks at the start of aquestion to relatively difficult tasks at the end of a question. The emphasis is on problem-solving.

Important Note:
Calculators:
1) For both examination papers, students will have an access to a GDC at all times.

Mathematical studies SL formula booklet
1) Each student will have access to a clean copy of the formula booklet during the examination.

Awarding of marks
1) In addition to correct answers, marks are awarded for method, accuracy and reasoning.
2) In paper 1, full marks are awarded for each correct answer irrespective of the presence or absence of working.
Where an answer is incorrect, marks are given for correct method. All students should therefore be advised to
show their working.
3) In paper 2, full marks are not necessarily awarded for a correct answer without working. Answers must be
supported by working and/or explanations. Where an answer is incorrect, marks are given for correct method. All students should therefore be advised to show their working.

Dear students,

Kindly refer to the paper syllabus and paper pattern details for Math HL Mock exam.

1. Syllabus component :

CORE :
All the six Core units will be assessed in paper 1 and 2:

(i) Algebra
(ii) Functions and equations
(iii) Circular functions and trigonometry
(iv) Vectors
(v) Statistics and Probability
(vi) Calculus

OPTION :
Topics which will be completed till 20th February will be assessed in paper 3.

Topic 9 Calculus

2. Assessment components :

(i) Paper 1 (2 hours)
No calculator allowed. (100 marks) (30% weightage)
Section A
Compulsory short-response questions based on the core syllabus.
Section B
Compulsory extended-response questions based on the core syllabus.

(ii) Paper 2 (2 hours)
Graphic display calculator required. (100 marks) (30% weightage)

Section A
Compulsory short-response questions based on the core syllabus.
Section B
Compulsory extended-response questions based on the core syllabus.

(iii) Paper 3 (1 hour)
Graphic display calculator required. (50 marks) (20% weightage)

Compulsory extended-response questions based mainly on the syllabus options.

Dear students and parents,

The following topics will be assessed in Math HL term 1 examination :
(1) Mathematical Induction
(2) Circular functions and Trigonometry
(3) Complex Numbers
(4) Polynomials
(4) Differential calculus (Except Graphs of functions and their derivatives)
(5) Integral calculus (Except Kinematics)

There will be two papers for Math HL first term examination :

Paper 1 – 2 hours – 100 marks – 50% weightage
Section A
Compulsory short response questions based on the core syllabus.
Section B
Compulsory extended response questions based on the core syllabus.
Use of GDC is not allowed in Paper 1.

Paper 2 – 2 hours – 100 marks – 50% weightage
Section A
Compulsory short response questions based on the core syllabus.
Section B
Compulsory extended response questions based on the core syllabus.
Use of GDC is allowed in Paper 2.

Important Note :
Section A is to be written in question paper and Section B is to be written in Answer booklets which will be provided by school.
IB Formulae Booklet for both the papers will be provided during exams.

Dear Parents,

The purpose behind circulating the consent form is specifically to bring to your notice the significance of graphical calculator. As far as Mathematics curriculum is concerned, graphic calculators will reinforce students’ understanding by actually visualizing graphs and other diagrammatic representations through the medium of graphics. Hence we are well in a position to assess, comprehend and analyse the Math concepts and most importantly IBDP Math curricula demands the usage of graphic calculators extensively. This also helps students to explore complex mathematical problems. Students are required to use GDC during DP final examinations, hence it is compulsory for all the students to learn the usage of GDC. Above mentioned information is already communicated to the students in the class.

This circular particularly is meant for reminding the importance of the graphic calculators and hence seek official approval for the same.

If you agree upon the logical reasoning already discussed and support the same then fill this form. If you want the school to purchase it then kindly send a cheque in the name of ‘Fountainhead education trust’ by 17th July,2017 (write the name of your child, class and section at the backside of the cheque). Students have to handover the cheque to their respective Math teacher.

Grade 12 Math HL – Highlights

Dear parents,

We learnt the following topics in this week in Paper 3 Calculus :

(i) Approximating functions using Taylor or Maclaurian Series
(ii) Lagrange’s remainder formula to find the upper bound error
(iii) Introduction to Slope fields and Isocline which help to estimate the graph of a function by analyzing the patterns of slope on a grid.

Above mentioned topics were well learnt with the help of online simulator to observe the patterns of slope fields and isocline. Past paper questions were practiced to master these topics.

Dear Parents,

Last week students learnt the following topics in option paper – Calculus :

(i) Revising the concept of radius of convergence and interval of convergence of Taylor and Maclaurian series
(ii) Representing functions as Taylor and Maclaurian series
(iii) Introduction to Binomial series and representing it as Taylor or Maclaurian series.
(iv) Finding radius of convergence and interval of convergence of binomial series. Also approximating the binomial series.
(v) Introduction to LaGrange’s form and Taylor’s formula of the remainder term to estimate the error when a function is approximated by Taylor series.

Students have solved many questions to understand these concepts. One worksheet for revising few concepts of paper 3 was shared with students as a homework and solution of all questions has been shared with them.

Dear Parents,

This is to inform you that last week, we completed the curriculum of term 2 and have started with the revision. Revision plan is prepared and shared with the students well in advance so that they are prepared for the upcoming classes accordingly.

Last week the following topics were discussed in class. Worksheets of exam style questions were prepared for the below mentioned topics and hard copies of it are given to students for practice.

(i) Applications of stationary points
(ii) Differential calculus
(iii) Logarithms and exponents
(iv) Sequences and series

Regular homework is also given to students and their doubts related to the same are solved in classes or through emails.

Students also appeared for a unit test on differential equation topic. The answer scripts will be given to them by tomorrow.

Dear Parents,

This week students learnt the following important concepts of Differential calculus :

(i) First and second derivative test
(ii) Problems on related rates
(iii) Concept of Optimization
(iv) Applications of differential calculus.

Real life based problems were solved by students in class. 3-4 worksheets were handed over to them so that extra practice can be done at home to master these concepts.

A unit test on Differential Calculus has been scheduled on 20th March,2016.
