Reminder: NES National Science Fest 2018 on 24th February,2018

Dear students,

NES International School Mumbai, Swapnanagari, Mulund west, Mumbai – 400082-in association with South Asian International Baccalaureate schools association has arranged a competition for Grades 7,8,9 and 11 on 24th February,2018. Interested students should send their names by email to Manish sir latest by 19thFebruary,2018.

There are different categories under which you can register yourself as below:

1.Science working model

Category (Junior)(Grade-8th and 9th)-group of 3 member

Category(Senior)(Grade -11)-Group of 3 member

Rules :
Dynamic and not static models
Models to be prepared by students themselves
Students must be prepared to answer judges’
questions about the content and development
of their projects.
A Team of maximum 3 students can participate.

2.Science Quiz Competition

Category(Junior)(Grade-8th and 9th)-Group of 2 member

Category(Senior)(Grade -11)-Group of 2 member

Event Details :
Various rounds of question answer sessions

based on scientific and technological
know-how

3.Scientific drawing and painting

Category(Junior)(Grade-8th and 9th)-Group of 2 member

Category(Senior)(Grade -11)-Group of 2 member

Rules :

Only poster colours, water colours and pencil colours allowed

Sketch pens, ink pens, oil colours, refill pens and wax crayons are not allowed

Drawing sheets will be supplied to the students. All other materials to be brought
by students themselves

4.Science Fiction competition

Category(Junior)(Grade-8th and 9th)-3 individual

Category(Senior)(Grade -11)-3 individual

Event Details :
The competition in-charge will assign a
topic on the spot.

Rules :

Maximum word count – 500 words

It should be entirely the original work of the entrant and not have been published
previously

5.JAM(Just a minute) competition

Category(Junior)(Grade-8th and 9th)-Group of 2 member

Category(Senior)(Grade -11)-Group of 2 member

Rules :
The Participants are challenged to speak for one
minute on a given science subject without
“repetition, hesitation, or deviation.”

6.Film making

Category (Junior)(Grade-8th and 9th)-group of 3 member

Category(Senior)(Grade -11)-Group of 3 member

Rules :

Film Duration – 5 Minutes

The student should try to make the film interesting to watch and also ensure that
that enough details are put in towards the science background of the student’s project.
Student could add graphs and other visuals to demonstrate his/her work.
The judges will review the summaries and films, and will assess against the
given criteria

7.Essay Writing

Grades :
Sub-Junior Group – Grades 5 to 7
Junior Group – Grades 8 to 10
Senior Group -Grades 11 and 12
Event Details :
The competition in-charge will assign
a topic on the spot.

8.Skit

Event Details :
The skits would be based on the theme
“Science & Technology in to-day Society”.
Grades :
Junior Group – Grades 8 to 10
Senior Group – Grades 11 and 12

Rules :

A Skit (8 to 10 minutes) should be presented by a group of 5 students, thus inducing a sense of scientific awareness among the audience.

9.Science Spelling Bee Competition :

Grades :
Sub-Junior Group – Grades 5 to 7
Note :

All instructions will be given at the time of the event

10.Science Story Telling-

Event Details:
Every participant will be given a Science
story suitable for narration on Scientific
method using Forest animals, 20 minutes
before the contest. Ability and talent
in narration will be evaluated.

11.Space Colony Design Competition
Grades :
Junior Group – Grades 8 to 10
Senior Group – Grades 11 and 12
Note :
Only one team comprising 3 members
from each category – Junior group
and senior group to participate

Rules:

Students will be given the Task to design a new Colony, to be discovered as a habitable
celestial body. The task is to design a Colony, complete with green houses, laboratory,
living quarters, rocket launch pads and industry to create fuel, using a combination of
the resources on the new celestial body and move cargo from the earth. In addition to
building the model, the students are to create a poster to accompany the model. This
poster should explain succinctly the reasons students chose to build the Colony either
on the Moon or Mars or other celestial body, its location on the space and what
resources from the Moon or Mars could be used to build a colony. Creativity has to be
demonstrated in the use of the type of energy that will sustain the colony.

For the purpose of this competition, students can attempt one of the following:

1.Create a variety of sketches on paper to represent the possible colony area in the
celestial body.
OR
2. Create a 3 – D model using any material like cardboard, paper, etc.

Rules for students who opt to build a model: (To be followed strictly)

a.All structures must be labelled clearly.
b. Materials for the space colony design competition will be provided.

There is no entry fee

Amount for food and travel expenses will be acknowledged to you by 20th Feb.

Amount will be deducted from imprest account.

One student can participate in one category only

10:20 am Students will leave from School.
Students can have their breakfast in bus.
10:45-10:55 am Students will reach Water Treatment Plant
11:00am-11:20am Introductory session by Engineer at WTP
11:20am-11:50am Students will visit WTP
12:15pm-12:20pm Students will reach school

For the ongoing unit of Biology- “All about the quiet living beings”, we will be visiting a greenhouse situated near Olpad on day 5 (30th January 2018) which is tomorrow from 10:20 am to 12:50 pm.

So kindly bring your school trousers and Id card for the field trip, also carry your biology notebook, a pen and Tiffin box(breakfast) from home. You will be expected to reach Rendezvous(Assembly area) by 10:10 am and sit section-wise on the stairs.

Note: Students without school trouser will not be allowed to attend the field trip.
