Welcome to S.r KG!!

Dear parents,

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a zealous summer break. It  was a wonderful experience  welcoming students on the first day of school. They gathered in the assembly area and were welcomed by the HRTs by tying a band on their wrist with a message “Our class would  knot be the same without you ”. The teachers took the students  to their respective classes.

The day started with a self introduction of all students and teachers with the song  “ Ikty pikty bubble bee…..can you tell your name to me?” Few routines and procedures were also revised with them and many creative activities were conducted.

I look forward working in unison for your child’s holistic development.

First day of school !

Jr KG learners were full of excitement as they assembled in Rendezvous (assembly) and were greeted by their HRT’s (Home room teachers) who gave them colorful smiles as per their respective class section color.

The faces of students were filled with varied expressions , few were glad to see their new teachers; some seemed little lost, and some comfortable in entering their big new world of learning……

Finally, they were taken to their respective classes and settled themselves in the new environment   Teachers then proceeded  with their planned activities.

Do stay in touch with us through diaries, blogs and e-mails.

And be on the look out for more in coming days !

Puppet show

Puppet show

In our yearlong unit “Stories”, our learners are continuously introduced to various mediums to understand that stories can be presented in a variety of forms.

On Thursday, 29th December, a surprise was planned for the learners. Puppet Theater was introduced through a Panchtantra story – “The Greedy Lion”. There was curiosity & excitement among the students before the surprise was disclosed. It was an entertaining time for them as well as a learning experience. A variety of puppets (hand puppet, stick puppet, finger puppet) and the way they can be used was demonstrated through the Puppet Theater.

Venturing out of class to learn Pictographs.

Venturing out of class to learn Pictographs.

I am overjoyed to share how our students learnt about Pictographs by using and developing their research skills in Math.

Students learnt pictographs under the strand, Data handling. During the sessions they developed the sub skills like- formulating questions, collecting data, recording data, organising data, interpreting data & presenting research findings.

Students were given the opportunity to draw pictographs of their own choice. They went through the process of collecting data by questioning different set of individuals. They surveyed and collected the data from different sections of Jr Kg and Other teachers and the admin staff. They recorded the data independently and organised it in the form of pictographs. Students presented their research findings by interpreting the pattern which emerged from the data collected in the class.

They came up with very beautiful real life examples of pictographs like – Vehicles, food items, flowers, vegetables, flavours of ice cream/cake, fruits, games, types of families, etc.

I would like to show and share the sample of one pictograph of different food items like- juice, Maggi and Manchurian, prepared by a Orange student.

Here the student collected the data from Violet. After collecting & organising data she presented her findings to the class teacher where she shared her interpretation that- “Ma’am mostly all Violet students like to eat more junk food like Manchurian and very few of them like to have juices.”

Through researching, students developed their confidence and communication skills during this activity.

Reflections of Term 1

First Day of the School.

On the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, teachers were excited to welcome learners and were all set to start the Academic Session of 2011.  The eager learners were assembled in the assembly and the teachers were busy sorting them section wise ( Red, Blue, White…….).

We were faced with a variety of learners, Few were excited to see their teachers, class, friends etc, few were crying, cranky in the scenario, and there was even some element of surprise in the air etc. At last the learners were sorted as per their sections.

Procedures and routines were introduced to the learners which helped them to settle down in their classes. They are required to abide by these procedures and routines for effortless (easy) functioning of the class. Gradually they settled down in the class.

The procedures & routines which learners follow daily are listed below:

Procedures for the classroom(These are the same across all the classes

  • We enter the class on time after getting off the bus, after every activity and breaks.
  • After settling we take our washroom break and then get started with our activity.
  • We keep our bags / diaries / Tiffin boxes / water bottles (filled and empty) and any other belongings properly at their places within 5 minutes of entering the class.
  • We keep our shoes at their allocated place/shoe racks.
  • We sit on our pre– allotted places.
  • We form a circle.(teacher will move her finger clock wise for circle time)
  • We raise our hands and wait for our turn to speak.(children have to put one finger on their lips & have to raise another hand for their turn)
  • We talk on topic related things.(if children go off track then teacher will move her hands in opposite direction)
  • We will keep our resources in their respective places after every activity (teacher will keep buzzing with any musical sound until they pack-up)
  • We seek our attention towards teacher (teacher will first clap 3 times than 2 times & then 1 time.)
  • We use  class stationery carefully
  • We walk in pairs quietly on the left side. (teachers will show two fingers to the children & they have to make a pair line for music, PE, Library & one finger for single line.)
  • We wash our hands before and after eating.
  • We share our resources with our friends.
  • We use the magic words like THANKYOU, PLEASE, SORRY, EXCUSE ME, wherever necessary.

Some pictures of learners following procedures & routines:

Elements covered in this unit were:

Learner profile: Knowledgeable, Inquirer, Reflective

Concepts: Form, Change

Attitudes: Curiosity, Enthusiasm.

Trans disciplinary Skills: Research Skills, Thinking skills, Communication skills, Social skills, Self management skills.

The unit on Materials began with the Tuning in activity where the learners were taken for a Nature Walk.

Learners were exposed to different  types of materials during tuning in activity.

There were experiments demonstrated by the teacher which helped the learners to build an understanding based on their prior knowledge.  The learners explored different kinds of materials and their properties which enabled them to associate and connect them with their real life. These exploration activities developed learners Skills: Research Skills, Thinking skills, Communication skills, Social skills, Self management skills.

  •  Soluble-Insoluble, Float-Sink

  • Elasticity

  • Magnetism

  • Viscosity

Learners were enthusiastic and curious (attitudes) to explore materials and to learn different properties.  Overall the unit was quite interesting for the learners as they were able to learn from exploring and playing.
