“The learners will have this product based LEAP sessions.

In the last cycle, the learners were introduced to “”TIME CAPSULE””further the learners were asked to think about creating their own time capsule keeping in mind the four aspects of “”Civilisation””. The learners created the list of the items which they want to put in their time capsule and also wrote down the details they would like to write in the time capsule.

The learners can go through a website for the better understanding of the time capsule.”” “”
In the coming cycle, the learners are expected to bring the time capsule in the school so that it adds more value to the unit.

As a part of UOI, the students of grade 5 are going for a field trip on 5th October, Wednesday.

Please make sure that your ward attends the school on that day.

LEAP Highlights for digital media unit!

After culminating the wellbeing unit with wonderful mental math activities and thinking tools the learners started the digital media unit with a bang..!!

While in the class room, learners were tuning in to the unit, the leap sessions of the unit triggered with the Speller game fused with tic-tac-toe.The vocabulary used for the game was related to the wellbeing unit and the upcoming unit. The fusion of tic-tac-toe with speller excited the learners.The learners examined/ self assessed their spelling skills and reflected that they could have won the game if spelled the words carefully.

Next cycle was when the learners truly stimulated their brains and dived into the sea of imagination with a new thinking tool. They were , Thinkers keys!
We used one thinkers key for this cycle, “What If

Here the class was divided into two groups and each group was given a situation,
1) What if the world has no facilities of Digital media at all.
2) What if all the communication that takes place has to happen with digital media only? i.e. digital media is the only medium / mode of communication in the world?”

Both the given situations are the extreme ends of a pyramid, now the learners were expected to imagine themselves into the given situation and think of.. How their life would be like? they had to write down their personal responses in the notebook, the learners had a liberty to even illustrate the same.
the learners came up with wonderful answers and we culminated the session a rich discussion. The objective of the session was to make them understand that in the digital world that we are living “Its important to maintain balance between the virtual and real world”
and which was successfully accomplished.

In the third cycle of the unit, the learners explored and important CORT-1 thinking tool called “consequences and sequels”
. As the session begun, the learners were made aware of both the terms 1)consequences 2)sequels. the learners were explained about the usage and importance of the tool moreover the learners were given enough examples for the same.
later the learners were asked to “list down the consequences and sequels for over using the digital media” in their notebooks.

This session proved to be very fruitful because in the previous session they could understand the extremes of Having and Not Having the digital media. the learners came up with amazing consequences and sequels for the same, and we culminated he session with the discussion.

The last cycle of the unit gave me an opportunity to enhance the figurative language of my learners. I grabbed this opportunity and tried to help them learn how effective and brilliant similes are made. We played a board game called “Simile Bingo” in the class. The learners were divided into 4 groups to get the effective results and they understood the beauty and importance of making right similes.
The culmination of the session took place when I explained them about how can an effective simile help in he creation of effective metaphor, which was an aha moment for the learners.

Learners, after setting the routines and procedures in the First cycle, enthusiastically started with Thinking tools.
This cycle , the learners learnt Two new thinking tool CAF (Consider All Factors) and FIP (First Important Priorities)
, they explored the thinking tools as to how and when to use the tool and also tried the same in the class on their own; the teacher followed “we do” and “you do” model where the teacher first explained the tool in detail with an example on the board and later the learners were given a topic to try out in the class / hw.

A brief on CAF:

CAF = Consider All Factors

When you have to choose or make a decision or just think about something, there are always many factors that you have to consider.

If you leave out some of these factors, your choice may seem right at the time but will later turn out to be wrong.

When you are looking at other people’s thinking, you can try and see what factors they have left out.

The next tool we used was FIP
A brief on FIP:
FIP = First Important Priorities

This tool is used when one has to select the most important ideas, factors, objectives, consequences and put them in a time sequence to plan out the actions.

Questions to ask yourself:

What is the sequence of events to arrive at success?
What are the first things that need to be done?

The children were asked to choose one out of two given topics and do a CAF and FIP for the same as H.W.

Highlights of the LEAP session conducted on materials.

For the Materials unit, under The strand “Design thinking” The learner’s were given a Design Challenge:
The challenge was to design a boat with the provided materials i.e.Popsical sticks, foil paper, paper cup, string, straw, duck tape, etc..
The given criteria was: The boat should sail in water for at least ten seconds with ten coins on it.
The learners first filled the worksheet and later on, in groups they chose the best design and built the same. Later the design was tested in a tub.
Few designs worked well and for the ones which did not work the learners were asked to think about the loop holes of the design and rework on it.
The learners got the clear understanding about the Central Idea “How materials behave and interact determines how we use them.”

Materials “QUIZ”

As a tuning in of Treasure hunt game on materials was played in the class, The learners were provided with a set of question cards in groups,and answer sheets were provided to individual student where the learners were expected to find the answers of the given questions. The purpose of this activity was to make learners explore different vocabulary related to materials, more over the learners also got an idea bout their knowledge on this topic. This activity helped learners inquire more.

This cycle the learners started with… Most awaited makers activity…integrated with the current UOI.

The learners will have this product based LEAP sessions for 2 cycles, i.e. the current and the next cycle.
In the current cycle the learners were introduced to “TIME CAPSULE” through a website.” ” further the learners were asked to think about creating their own time capsule keeping in mind the four aspects of “Civilization”. The learners created the list of the items which they want to put in their time capsule and also wrote down the details they would like to write in the time capsule.
the whole task was done in the UOI note book.
In the coming cycle the learners are expected to bring the required material to school and make the time capsule in the school in the given slot.

LEAP- “Here Now There Then” UOI Integration

Last cycle, the learners learnt a new visible thinking routine “Here Now / There Then”

Purpose: The routine encourages students to consider past perspectives and develop a better understanding of how thinking changes over time and across cultures. It helps students acknowledge that we have strong stances regarding controversial issues, and that our stances are influenced by social and historical context. It is also helps to uncover stereotypical perceptions as well as ethnocentric and present judgments.
The routine was integrated with the current UOI and learners learnt how to make connections with the past and present, more over the learners also compared the lifestyles of the past and present civilizations.
The learners were shown the images related to four aspects of civilization, of different times. For example, the learners saw the Images of houses/ Town planning of Harrappan civilization, and the houses of current times and compared the two with the help of following key questions.
1.) How is it?
2) What is the change? / What is the difference?
3) Why do “you” think has the change come?
The learners answered the given questions and it gave them the clarity about the concepts of the unit.
